Senior Capstone Project

Every Global Studies senior creates a year-long capstone project. We conduct in-depth research, write a research paper, and create two other products to demonstrate our learning.  I am exploring the relationship between the internet and extremism, specifically white supremacy, for my capstone. I am examining how social media is the perfect environment for extremist ideologies, like white supremacy and nationalism, to grow and thrive.

As I continue working on my project, I will update this page!

My Thesis

Due to its evolution from bulletin board systems to algorithm-driven social media platforms, the internet has become a thriving ecosystem where extremist ideologies, like white nationalism are readily accessible and amplified to wider audiences, creating a significant challenge for global efforts to counter radicalization.

Product #1: Research Paper

In my research paper, The Evolution of Extremism Online: How the Internet Amplifies White Supremacist Ideologies, I explore how the internet has transformed into a powerful tool for the spread of extremist ideologies, particularly white supremacy. I trace the origins of online extremism from early bulletin board systems (BBS) in the 1980s to the rise of the World Wide Web, which expanded their influence. I examine how platforms like Stormfront, 4chan, and social media networks have facilitated the rapid spread of racist propaganda, conspiracy theories, and violent rhetoric, often leading to real-world consequences. My research highlights how algorithm-driven content promotion and minimal regulation have allowed extremist groups to recruit and radicalize individuals more effectively than ever before. Through historical analysis and case studies, I demonstrate how the internet has not only magnified white nationalist ideologies but also contributed to the normalization of hate speech in digital spaces, posing a significant challenge to global counter-extremism efforts.

Product #2: Infographic

For my second product, I created an infographic meant to educate others on how to recognize and prevent exposure to extremist content on the internet. It highlights key strategies such as staying informed through credible news sources, recognizing red flags of radical content, utilizing fact-checking tools, reporting harmful information, and educating others about misinformation and online manipulation tactics. With the large volume of extremist content and ideologies being spread on digital platforms, infographics like this are crucial tools for encouraging critical thinking, media literacy, and online safety.
